Son Heung-Min makes South Korea history with free-kick golazo

Son-SK-AllTimeScorer

Son Heung-Min now stands alone atop South Korea’s goal-scoring mountaintop.

LAFC's superstar attacker became his country's all-time leading goal scorer, reaching 59 career tallies for the Taegeuk Warriors with a beautiful free kick during Tuesday's 2-0 international friendly win over Uzbekistan.

Son officially surpassed South Korean legend Cha Bum-Kun, the nation's previous record holder with 58 goals.

Son's exquisite strike broke the ice in the sixth minute, before Oh Se-Hun rounded out the win at Yongin Mireu Stadium with a 60th-minute goal.

With the result, South Korea ended the September/October international window with two wins, one draw and one loss.

Son scored three goals over those four games, including another spectacular free kick against Ecuador.

Playoff push

Son's historic international window with South Korea comes at a crucial time for LAFC, who recently parted ways with head coach Marc Dos Santos amid winning just one of their last 10 matches (1W-4L-5D).

Interim manager Xavi Tamarit will make his debut on the sidelines on Saturday when the Black & Gold welcome Thomas Müller and Western Conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps FC to BMO Stadium (10:30 pm ET | Apple TV).

Son is expected to take center stage alongside fellow LAFC superstar attacker Denis Bouanga, the club's all-time leading scorer. They've combined for 20 goals and 21 assists this year.

LAFC are sixth in the West (41 points). They have eight games left to jump back into a top-four spot that guarantees home-field advantage in Round One of the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs.
