CF Montreal have loaned homegrown midfielder Tomas Giraldo to Canadian Premier League side FC Edmonton for the 2021 season without a right to recall the player, it was announced Friday.

Giraldo, 17, was signed by Montreal in June 2020 after developing in their academy. With a deep roster of homegrown talent, Montreal also recently loaned two others to CPL teams for 2021 with a right to recall: defender Karifa Yao to Cavalry FC and defender Keesean Ferdinand to Atletico Ottawa.

ā€œAs we did with the Karifa Yao and Keesean Ferdinand loans, we want to give Tomas an opportunity to play minutes this season and gain experienceā€, sporting director Olivier Renard said in a club release. ā€œI reiterate that we have great confidence in our young Homegrown players and that a loan is a positive step in their development.ā€

Giraldo was born in Colombia, though represented Canada at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil. He joined Montreal’s U-13 team in 2015 from FSS Salaberry and awaits his MLS debut.

CF Montreal are entering their second season under head coach Thierry Henry. It’s been a busy offseason for the club, ranging from an overall rebrand to a slew of incoming and outgoing transactions.
